A Guide to Vintage Candleholders: Finding Character in the Afterglow
Learn how to choose, place, and enjoy vintage candleholders as decorative objects in a lived-in room.
Vintage candleholders bring their own kind of atmosphere even before a candle is lit. Their job is not only to hold light; they add line, colour, and a sense of occasion to a shelf, mantel, or supper table.
Look for a silhouette first
A good candleholder has a shape that holds up in daylight. Notice the curve of the base, the thickness of the stem, and the way a figurative piece reads from across the room.
Keep placement practical
Use a stable surface away from curtains, dried flowers, and busy traffic. For an active candle, check the opening and use an appropriately sized taper or tea light. For a purely decorative arrangement, let the empty holder do the talking.
Build a small gathering
One sculptural holder can stand alone. Two or three can form a loose conversation when their heights vary. Keep the colour story narrow and leave enough room for the light to travel between them.
